Team Selection Policy

Team selections are the sole responsibility of the respectve Coordinators in consultation with Coaches and the Club President.

Players who are considered unfinancial will not be placed in a team.

Coordinators will select each seasons teams having consideration for the following:

–    Each player’s skills and abilities based on Coordinators and Coaches assessment

–    Each player’s ability to cope at a particular Grade Level

–    Each player’s age and overall basketball experience

–    Each player’s dedication and behaviour at training and during games

–    Overall team balance (Number of talls, smalls, ball carriers, scorers etc.)

Nearing the end of each season, all coaches are required to submit to the Coordinators their feedback on each player from their team. To keep this process as fair as possible, giving all players equal opportunity, Coaches are not allowed to select their own teams for the coming season.

With players moving in and out of the Club each season, a players place in a particular team cannot be guaranteed from one season to another. Each season is looked at with ‘fresh eyes’ to accommodate player movement in and out of the Club and individual improvement in some players.

Teams will generally consist of 6 to 8 players. On rare occasions, where there is no other option, 9 players may be placed in a team.

Junior players may be invited to play a second game in a higher age group if a vacancy exists.

In accordance with DVBA By-Laws they will be restricted to playing in a team one age group higher.

For Under 8 teams only, where finals are not played, consideration may be given to other factors such as player friendships and parental convenience, however this will not be guaranteed and will not be done if it is detrimental or unfair to another player.

Age group U16s and upwards - Teams are selected slightly differently from the younger age groups. Team 1  (one) will always be a selection based on skill and ability, however the other teams may be referred to as friendship teams or a combination of friendship and skill.

If your young person finds that they would rather play with their mates than a formally allocated team, you may email the co-ordinator with a request of the players they would like in their team for the registered season. However it is mandatory that ALL players need to do the same.

A friendship team must

- have 8 players (or the club may allocate additional players to make up numbers)

- have a Coach (over the age of 18)

- have a Team Manager, who can also be the Coach

- Training is optional, we understand that from this age - school, work and other sports can interfere with training, just let us know as we will try to accommodate where possible.
